Borrelioosin ym. patogeenien toteamiseksi yritetään nyt löytää nopeampia ja luotettavampia tutkimusmenetelmiä USA:n armeijan tarpeisiin - saataisiinkohan tätä kautta viimein luotettava menetelmä borrelioosin toteamiseksi yleisemminkin:


Project Title:
Rapid Detection and Identification of Zoonotic Pathogens
Abstract: Zoonotic pathogens including those transmitted by insect vectors are some of the most deadly of all infectious diseases known to mankind. In the past, wars and natural disasters were the main catalysts that promoted epidemics of these ancient afflictions, which are normally transmitted by fleas, lice and ticks.

Many of these diseases remain endemic in various regions of the world and therefore pose serious threats to U.S. armed forces troops and civilians who might enter endemic disease zones. A number of these agents have been further weaponized and are widely recognized as being the most significant biothreat agents.

Study of disease agents and development of rapid means for their detection take on added importance in light of the use of anthrax for a bioterror attack on the U.S.A.

The aim of this proposal is to modify a novel DNA-based methodology we have developed for profiling genomic DNAs to permit rapid, cultivation-free differential detection and identification of biothreat infectious agents in their natural environments, including intermediate infected hosts, and clinical specimens from humans or infected animals.

We plan to use Borrelia burgdorferi, the arthropod-borne etiologic agent of Lyme disease and Yersinia pestis, the etiologic agent of plague, as our principle test agents to work through the systems. We will begin with B. burgdorferi since although it has a complicated life-cycle involving both arthropod and animal intermediates, it is easy to grow and we have extensive experience in working with it in different complex environments including ticks, rodents and human samples.

Thus it gives us the opportunity of detecting this pathogen in a variety of complex environments. We also have significant experience with characterizing and identifying subtle changes in the genome of Y. pestis utilizing genomic signature tags. We will use these methods as the foundation of new, high-throughput sequence-based systems to detect zoonotic and/or vector-borne biothreat agents such as Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, Rickettsia ricketsii and other human pathogens such as Ehrlichia and Babesia species.

This technology can ultimately be adapted as a sensitive method to detect specific DNA signature sequences from both known and unknown pathogens in a wide variety of complex environments and since it is PCR-based it has the advantage that only minimal quantities of starting material are needed for analysis.

Mites Bowen-testing? Sehän on kai luotettavin olemassa olevista, mutta ei virallinen...Onko kellään käsitystä siitä?

Monet eurooppalaisetkin borrelioosia sairastavat henkilöt ovat lähettäneet verinäytteensä Bowenille sen jälkeen kun heidän testituloksensa ovat oleet negatiiviset omassa maassa. Useimmiten näytteet ovat tulleet Bowenilta takaisin positiivisina. Tästä syystä Bowenin tuloksia kohtaan on esitetty kritiikkiä. Laboratorion mukaan heille lähettävät näytteitä sellaiset henkilöt, jotka epäilevät vahvasti sairastavansa borrelioosia ja sen vuoksi suurin osa tuloksista on ollut positiivisia. Tietääkseni suurin osa sellaisista henkilöistä jotka ovat saaneet positiiviset tulokset Bowenilta, ovat sen jälkeen saaneet hoidot omasta maastaan.

Bowen hakee parhaillaan patenttia FDA:lta uusimmalle borrelioositestilleen nimeltään "Q-RiBb" -testi. Testi on ollut käytössä jo jonkin aikaa. Kaikista näytteistä on tähän mennessä löytynyt Bb - aiemmissa testeissä potilaiden näytteet olivat tulleet takaisin negatiivisina tai rajatapauksina! On siis mahdollista että tämä testi on nykyisin käytössä olevia menetelmiä paljon tehokkaampi ja varmempi - lopullinen varmuus saadaan tutkimusten myötä - toivottavasti testin mahdolliseen viralliseen hyväksymiseen/hylkäämiseen tulevat vaikuttamaan ainoastaan objektiiviset tutkimukselliset näytöt eivätkä esim erilaiset taloudelliset intressipiirit!


"The Bowen Lab receives blood specimens for Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) from all of the United States. In addition, the Bowen lab receives blood from doctors ordering the test from Canada, Brazil, Denmark, Scotland, The Netherlands, Ireland, England, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and the Canary Islands. The recent database numbers for those tested is approximately 7,000. According to a recent poll of patients clinically diagnosed with Lyme disease whose physicians had ordered the Bowen Q-RIBb test, 100% of those patients tested with the Bowen reported their tests were positive for Bb.

Outside critics of the test believe the Bowen has ?too many positives.? Not so, if you consider that the people taking the Bowen Q-RiBb test could be ?clinically diagnosed? with Lyme just by evaluating their symptoms. Most had received negative or equivocal test results with the other Lyme tests ordered by their physicians. When negative or equivocal test results are interpreted by their physicians, it is determined that it is unlikely that their patients are infected with the Lyme bacteria. Physicians are hesitant to ?clinically? diagnose Lyme based on the symptoms alone. Patients pro-actively seeking an answer to their continued symptoms and suffering eventually learn about the Bowen Q-RIBb test. A positive result with the Bowen test helps these people finally get a proper diagnosis and get properly treated for Lyme disease and co-infections. The Bowen Q-RIBb test just recently received its preliminary US Patent approval. Although the Bowen Q-RiBb Test is not presently approved by the FDA for Lyme disease; an application for FDA approval is now pending. http://www.bowen.org/index_004.htm
