Borrelioositapausten määrä on noussut vuosina 2006 -2007 yli 50 % esim. Marylandissa. Luku on kuitenkin huomattavasti tätä suurempi sillä yhdeksän kymmenestä borrelioositapauksesta jää raportoimatta. Nyt asiaan halutaan muutos Marylandissa. Suunnitteilla on esim. borrelioositutkimuskeskus.

Hanke sai alkunsa siitä, kun osavaltion työntekijät alkoivat sairastua kroonisiin oireisiin eikä saatavilla ollut lääkäreitä jotka olisivat osanneet hoitaa ihmisiä. "Tarvitsemme lääkäreitä emmekä enää uusia kampanjoita joissa kehotetaan estämään punkinpurema laittamalla sukat lahkeiden päälle!"

The plan for building a Lyme Disease Center for Excellence was originally discussed about two years ago- literally tossed at us unexpectedly by legislators after I kept saying to the lame offers of help coming from the Health Department and Hopkins... "We need DOCTORS, we need DOCTORS- our patients are chronically ill already! We don't need more brochures from the CDC and a "possible" campaign to start NEXT year telling people to pull their socks up over their pants legs!"
