Kortisonin käytön on todettu mm. vähentävän verenkiertoa reisiluun päässä - pahimmillaan seurauksena on ollut nivelen korjausleikkaus.


....it is well documented that low dose corticoidsteroids causes decreased blood flow to the head of the femur. I know a 38 yr. old woman sueing her Dr. right now for failure to tell of of these side effects. She's has to have a femur
head replacement after months of complaining of hip pain (and being given pain killers cuz "it took a while" to find the cause.).

From the litereature I've read, this can occur with high doses in as short a time as a month - and for "low" dose - that's left up to individual Dr.s, but I am under the impression the < 5mg is
considered low. ...One has to be very carefull with corticoid steroids.

I'll never gorget what my Vet told me:"You can walk an animal into the autopsy room on Steroids".

Avascular necrosis (avn) post heart-transplantation has been considered to be due to the high doses of steroids used to immunosuppress these patients in attempting to prevent transplant rejection.

This study shows that avascular necrosis occurs even when low dose steroids regimes are used and demonstrates no significant correlation between steroid dosage and the development of avn. Patients with symptomatic avn benefit from early diagnosis and management of their condition in that the need for total joint arthroplasty can be prevented in many cases.
