Onkohan masennuksen nykyinen hoito/tutkimus ajan tasalla - esim. sellaisten kohdalla joilla on todettu jokin infektiotauti?
Cytokines and Psychopathology: Lessons from Interferon-alpha.
Depression in the medically ill occurs 5 ? 10 times more often than in the general population and has a significant impact on quality of life. While there has been substantial focus on the psychosocial factors that may contribute to this high rate of depression in medically ill patients, new developments in neurobiology and immunology have raised novel considerations regarding its pathophysiology and treatment. Specifically, data have demonstrated that proinflammatory cytokines released during tissue damage and destructions (and the resultant inflammation) can have a substantial impact on neurotransmitter function, neuroendocrine function, and behavior. Behavioral changes include the induction of a syndrome called ?sickness behavior? that has overlapping features with major depression. Therefore, it has been proposed that proinflammatory cytokines released in the contest of immune activation/inflammation may, in turn, contribute to the high rate of mood disorders, especially depression in the medically ill.
