Lymen tauti eli borrelioosi leviää Yhdysvalloissa ja Kanadassa hälyttävää vauhtia, mutta monet potilaat diagnosoidaan yhä väärin. Kuinka Lymen taudista on tullut jo aidsiin verrattava epidemia? TV1 ma 1.9. klo 19.00.
Borrelioosi tai Lymen tauti on infektiotauti, joka tarttuu punkin puremasta. Oireina voi olla ympyrämäinen ihottuma sekä punoittava tai sinertävä pehmeä kasvannainen.
Tautia hoidetaan yleensä antibioottilääkkeillä. Kuukausia myöhemmin voi kehittyä muita oireita, joista tavallisimpia ovat neurologiset taudinkuvat kuten kasvohalvaus, aivokalvon-, hermojuuri- tai vastaava aivotulehdus.
Lymen tautia vastaan ei Euroopassa toistaiseksi ole saatavilla rokotetta. USA:ssa on saatu päätökseen laaja rokotekokeilu ihmisillä ja rokotetta kehitetään parhaillaan. Yksi rokote tuli Pohjois-Amerikassa markkinoille jo 1990-luvun lopussa, mutta se vedettiin pois sivuvaikutuksina ilmenneiden niveltulehdusten takia.
