Cytokines
Neuroborreliosis is one of the forms of Lyme disease
in which the most important are the clinical syndromes
of damage of both CNS and PNS. One of the little
studied problems is the dynamics of cytokine profile
in neuroborreliosis patients as an important
pathogenetic factor. The interferon status including
a-IF and g-IF changes in neuroborreliosis patients at
different stages of the disease. Of particular
interest is the analysis of the induced production of
interferons a-IF and g-IF and also cytokines
(interleukin-1), a factor of tumor necrosis (TNF-a),
interleukin-6 and chemokines (interleukin-8,
interleukin-2) in neuroborreliosis patients.
Objective: To study the interferon and cytokine
statuses in neuroborreliosis patients.
Methods: To determine parameters of the activity of
the virus-induced a-IF, mitogen-induced g-IF, IL-1,
TNF- a, IL-6, IL-2, IL-8 in neuroborreliosis patients.
Results: We studied the interferon status in 60
patients, aged from 7 to 55 years, the citokine status
in 50 patients, aged from 12 to 52 years with a
significant diagnosis of Lyme disease,
neuroborreliosis.The duration of the disease was from
6 months to 5 years with clinical symptoms of CNS
damage and/or symptoms of PNS damage. The study of the
interferon status revealed a considerable defect in
the system of interferon-a, the average level of whose
production for the group was decreased by 2.6 times
(37.5%) compared with parameters in donors (97.4%). In
all patients there was noted a considerable activation
of the anti-inflammation group of cytokines,
especially TNF-a and IL-1, with an increase of
activity by 2 to 11 times. IL-1 level was increased in
all patients. We obtained dissociation between
activation of anti-inflammation cytokines and links of
cellular immunity. One could note a suppression of
T-helpers (CD4) and a decrease in the absolute
fagocytic index of microbial bodies and phagocytosis.
Conclusions: Neuroborreliosis with the predominant
damage of CNS is characterized by a considerable
decrease of a-IF and a moderate decrease of g-IF. A
long-term exposure with anti-inflammatory cytokines
leads in a cascade-like way to a break of adaptation
mechanisms and triggering of autoimmune aggression.
The study permits to use immunocorrecting drugs for
restoration of interferon status in combination with
antibacterial therapy.
