Kortisonin käyttö borrelioosin hoidossa jakaa mielipiteitä voimakkaasti "borrelioosipiireissä". Seuraavissa tutkimuksissa kortisonilla todettiin selviä haittavaikutuksia. Kortisonia ennen antibioottihoitoja saaneiden potilaiden sairauden saaminen remissioon vaati pidempiä ja toistuvia antibioottihoitoja verrattuna niihin, jotka eivät saaneet kortisonia.

In this report, pts who received intra articular steroids prior to antibiotic treatment required more courses of antibiotics and longer times for disease remission.


Straubingerin tutkimuksissa kortisonia saaneet koirat saivat vakavan niveltulehduksen. Toisessa tutkimuksessa kortisonin todettiin aiheuttavan borrelioosin puhkeamisen uudelleen.

In this study 50% of the control dogs who received prednisone developed severe polyarthritis while those without prednisone developed mild cases. In other work, Straubinger showed that prednisone can reactivate Lyme Disease inpersistently infected dogs that had not receceived antibiotics previously.
