BBB = veri-aivoeste. Seuraavat tutkijat tekivät jo 90-luvun alussa kokeita joissa todettiin mm. Bb:n läpäisevän veri-aivoesteen ja liittyvän hermosoluihin - se saattaa heidän mukaansa osaltaan selittää syyn siihen miksi bakteeria ei useimmiten löydetä selkäydinnesteestä (CSF) ja miksi Bb kykenee selviytymään keskushermostossa (CNS).

?In a series of experiments, we have studied the permeability of the BBB after experimental infection with the organism, as well as the interactions of the organism with macroglia cells (astroglia, oligodendroglia) of the nervous system in terms of cell adhesion and injury. We found evidence for early invasion of the CNS by this organism and affinity for and injury to marcrglia?

....?After the intravenous injection of the organism, an increased in the BBB permeability was observed, which was maximal at 48 hours and returned to normal within 7 days. This increase was dose-dependent, with a dose of 10 to the 7 organisms producing increased permeability in 50% of animals? The experiment was also performed by injecting the organisms directly into the CSF rather than intravenously. This time no disruption of the BBB was noted, suggesting that the interaction with the endothelium must be from the intraluminal side. The nearly 12- 24 hour delay between inoculation and BBB alterations suggests that a systemic mediator may play of role

...?Given that most of these cultures are astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, we suggest that the adherence of spirochetes to these cells may represent a fist step in the initiation of neurologic injury. The interaction of the organism with nervous cells could at least in part explain why it is only seldom isolated from the CSF and could facilitate the long-term persistence in the CNS.

?The direct damage to these cells may be of clinical relevance, as these cells perform very important functions in the nervous system, such as myelin production, regulation of the BBB, and neuronal metabolism?.

..?SEM showed important morphological alterations in the oligodendroglia, consisting of contraction of the membrane sheets, and the production of bulbous protrusions and membranous blebs. Spirochetes were noted to be adhered to the surface of these cells between the membrane folds and among the blebs.?
