Seuraavissa tutkimuksissa on havaittu AHCC:n (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) olevan käyttökelpoista (hiirikokeet) immuunijärjestelmän vahvistamisessa ja myös ennaltaehkäisevänä lääkityksenä tiloissa joissa immuunijärjestelmän toiminta on heikentynyt.Valmisteen etuna esim. immunoglobuliiniin on mm. se että sitä voidaan antaa tablettihoitona.

Active hexose correlated compound enhances the immune function of mice in the hindlimb-unloading model of spaceflight conditions.

Hindlimb unloading is a ground-based model that simulates some of the aspects of spaceflight conditions, including lack of load bearing on hindlimbs and a fluid shift to the head. It has been shown that treatment with active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) restores resistance to infection in mice maintained under hindlimb- unloading conditions. The present study was designed to clarify the mechanisms by which AHCC enhances resistance to infection in this model. We hypothesized that oral administration of AHCC will enhance the function of the immune system, which could lead to the increased resistance to infection observed in this model. AHCC or the excipient was orally administered to mice, and the function of the immune system was assessed in spleen and peritoneal cells isolated from those groups. The results of the present study showed that administration of AHCC for 1 wk before and throughout the second day of the hindlimb-unloading period enhanced the function of the immune system assessed by spleen cell proliferation and cytokine production in spleens and nitric oxide and cytokine production in peritoneal cells.

These findings suggest that AHCC can be used as a potent immunoenhancer, especially in cases in which the immune system is suppressed by any condition, including diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus infection and cancer.

Prophylactic Efficacy of a Basidiomycetes Preparation AHCC against Lethal Opportunistic Infections in Mice

The prophylactic effects of a Basidiomycetes preparation, AHCC, against experimental opportunistic infections were investigated in leukopenic mice. In cyclophosphamide-induced leukopenic mice, oral or intraperitoneal administration of the AHCC at doses of 1000 or 50mg/ kg/day, respectively, for 4 consecutive days prior to Candida albicans infection significantly prolonged the survival periods of the infected mice, and decreased the viable counts of C.albicans cells recovered from their kidneys. Similarly, the oral treatment with AHCC protected mice from lethal infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and intraperitoneal one also protected mice from infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

These results suggest a potential usefulness of the AHCC as a prophylactic agent for the management of patients with opportunistic infections.

Description



* Immunomax ® contains extract from several kinds of edible mushrooms including Shitake, Maitake etc. which are cultured in liquid medium by using advanced biotechnique.
* The main active components of Immunomax® are oligosaccharides, Active Hexose Correlated Compounds (AHCC).
* The molecular weight of AHCC is about 5000 and the oligomer of glucose in AHCC has the alpha-1,4-linkage and some hydroxy group are esterized.

Usage

* AHCC was discovered to be as a biological response modifier (BRM) and to possess powerful antitumor properties when given at a higher dosage.

* AHCC works by boosting the immune system function including increasing macrophages.

Clinical effectiveness

* Recently, several clinical investigations have proved that AHCC shows several effects. AHCC is usually used as an adjuvant to cancer patients with other antitumor chemotherapeutics or as a preventive agent for the side-effects of chemical therapeutics in cancer treatment.
* In one study, AHCC was administrated for 300 progressive and end-stage cancer patients at doses of 3g/day or 6g/day, cancer disappeared completely in 25 patients and in 28 patients cancer decreased more than 50%. Table 1 shows the results of AHCC effectiveness.
* AHCC is effective on keeping good QOL (quality of life) states such as increasing appetite, feeling good, sleeping well and recovering from fatigue at terminal treatment in cancer patients.
* AHCC is a functional food effective on the hepatocellular carcinoma combined with cirrhosis with ascites.

Hematological change after taking AHCC (p.73, 10th International Symposium of AHCC Research Association, 2002)

* There was no clear change in white blood cell (WBC), hemoglobin, hematocrit and thrombocyte number after taking AHCC, even though, they were undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy. So this study suggests that AHCC can be used for prevention of bone marrow suppression of chemotherapy.
* Natural killer cells increased about 20% 3-6 months after taking AHCC.
* There was no clear change in the ratio of CD4/CD8 till the first 3 months. It decreased a little after 6 months.
* From the hematoimmunologiacal point of view, AHCC treatment seems to be safe and good for cancer patients.

* AHCC intake can be as a complementary therapy of postoperative hepatocellular carcinoma patients suppressing hepatitis, preventing recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma and prolonging survival rate (p. 116, 10th International Symposium of AHCC Research Association, 2002).

* AHCC treatment improved chemotherapy induced digestive tract side effects, inhibited chemotherapy induced WBC reduction (p. 119, 2002, 10th International Symposium of AHCC Research Association, 2002).
