Borreliabakteereita löydetään usein saariston merilinnuista:


"The importance of birds, particularly seabirds, as a vehicle for Borrelia-infected ticks and of B. burgdorferi sensu lato on the Faeroe Islands is evident. Our findings indicate a transfer of B. garinii to humans by the vector I. uriae. The epidemiological and clinical importance of B. garinii on the Faeroe Islands and other regions with similar ecological components needs further investigation."
