Borreliabakteerista on yli 300 eri kantaa.

Symptoms, diagnosis and treatment

May 31, 2005

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected deer ticks. The disease is most common from May through August, when the ticks are most active and people are outdoors. Lyme disease is not transmitted from one human to another.

Symptoms: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, within days to weeks after a tick bite, 80% of patients will have a red, slowly expanding bull's-eye rash (called erythema migrans) accompanied by fatigue, fever, headache, stiff neck, muscle aches and joint pain. Dr. Arnold Markowitz, the Michigan Lyme Association and the Lyme Foundation report that there are several different kinds of rashes that could appear and, according to Markowitz, only about 20% of patients exhibit the bull's-eye rash. Weeks to months later, untreated patients may develop arthritis, neurologic abnormalities, inflammation of the brain and, in some cases, cardiac problems such as atrioventricular block, acute inflammation of the tissues surrounding the heart or an enlarged heart.

Diagnosing: The disease is difficult to pinpoint because symptoms can mimic lupus, Lou Gehrig's disease, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease. Although multiple laboratory tests are available, false positives and false negatives can be produced. No test can definitely rule out Lyme disease, and a series of tests can cost several hundred dollars.

Treatment: Antibiotic treatment for three or four weeks is generally effective in the early stages of the disease. If it is diagnosed later, neurological manifestations may require treatment with intravenous ceftriaxone or penicillin for four weeks or more, depending on the disease's severity. With more than 300 strains of Bb bacteria, there is no test to determine which antibiotic works best and none to determine whether the Lyme bacteria are completely gone.

Prevention: Avoid tick habitats -- ticks favor a moist, shaded environment, especially one with leaf litter -- and wear light clothing so ticks can be spotted more easily. Also wear long-sleeved shirts, tuck pants into socks or boot tops and use insect repellants containing DEET.
