Chlamydia pneumoniae May Be Associated With MS

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Oct 12 - Study of brain tissue, central nervous system (CNS) tissue and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sediment from multiple sclerosis (MS) patients reveals the presence of Chlamydia pneumoniae antigens, researchers report in the October 1st issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

"In at least in a subset of MS patients, there is an association between the presence of the organism in the brain and MS," lead investigator Dr. Subramaniam Sriram told Reuters Health. "The location of the organism in areas of the lining of the ventricular wall is unique and may explain the locations of the lesions in MS."

Dr. Sriram of the Multiple Sclerosis Research Laboratory, Nashville, Tennessee and colleagues made an immunohistochemical, molecular and ultrastructural comparison of specimens from 20 patients with MS and 17 controls with other neurological diseases.

In seven of the MS patients, immunohistochemical staining was seen in association with ependymal surfaces and periventricular regions of brain tissue. This was not seen in any of the controls.

Other studies using PCR techniques showed C. pneumoniae DNA in the same regions. Analysis of CSF showed major outer membrane protein DNA from the organism more often in MS patients than in controls.

These and other findings "support our suspicion of the presence of chlamydial organisms in the CNS, in a subset of patients with MS," the researchers write.

The pathogen may be an infectious trigger that leads to autoimmunity or a secondary invader that accentuates the ongoing inflammatory response, they add.

However, Dr. Subramaniam pointed out that "only a well controlled and conducted treatment trial is likely to indicate a directly causal link between the presence of the organism in the brain and either the development or progression of MS."
