Borrelioosia sairastavilta löydetään toisinaan Epstein Barr -virusta.

Epstein-Barr Virus in Pediatric MS (JAMA)

This is a very thorough case-control study (JAMA, April 21, 2004-Vol. 291, No. 15:1875-1879) done at the University of Toronto, which found an association between EBV infection and pediatric MS. Samples were from children enrolled in the study at the Pediatric MS Clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.)

Symptomatic infection with EBV (infectious mono) can be associated with CNS demyelination. A sequence found in the EBV nuclear antigen shares a sequence with an epitope of myelin basic protein, a major component of the myelin sheath. Also, a B-cell surface antigen protein was recently identified as a major autoantigen that is induced by EBV and is abnormally expressed in the brains of MS patients.

Association of EBV with adult MS is significant, but EBV infects more than 90% of the healthy adult population. Children with MS are significantly more likely to have experienced EBV infection than their healthy peers (for whom the majority have yet to be exposed to the virus).
